The Spirit of Sports initiative was created by one of Cayman’s leading marketing communications agencies, Tower, and was born out of our passion for sport and our desire to recognise sporting excellence and celebrate sportsmanship.
Our values are aligned closely with the words of Pierre de Coubertin, whose initiative helped to create the modern Olympic Games, and who said – the important thing is not to win, but to take part.
The Spirit of Sports initiative aims to recognise all those who work tirelessly to promote and support sports in the Cayman Islands, as well as to help ensure that sports are accessible to all within our society.
Sports is important to us because we believe in the benefits it brings to society – and in a small community like ours the benefits are magnified. Studies show children who play sport are less likely to use drugs and smoke, they tend to perform better academically in school, have lower school dropout rates and a better chance of getting into college. Not to mention the benefits to health and wellness such as lower risk of cardiovascular disease and obesity.
Sports play an important role in imparting character values in children and adults alike. Sports can help teach honesty, teamwork, fair play, rule following and citizenship. Sport can demonstrate the importance of hard work and determination. It reminds us of what it takes to truly live well – discipline, dedication to a goal, the quest for excellence, risk, and growth.
The Spirit of Sports initiative will consist of four main components:
- An annual Awards Gala – a stylish and high profile affair supported by organisations that recognise the importance of supporting sport in the local community. We will recognise and celebrate not only our country’s elite sportsmen and women, but equally the unsung heroes of Cayman’s sports community. The gala is scheduled for Spring/Summer 2017.
- A Public Awareness Campaign to promote the importance of sports in our community and to celebrate sportsmanship.
- Charity work will be undertaken by the Spirit of Sports Foundation year-round and will include providing small grants to support sports development, fair play, education and coaching, and general access to sports in the Cayman Islands.
- Periodic Training, Camps, Tournaments and Events for those involved with sports in Cayman.
